So it is week 3 of homeschool for us. We are LOVING it so far. My daughters haven’t complained once about lesson time. We have learned so much together already. I feel like we have become much closer too. I want to tell you why it is going so well and why I believe it will continue this way.
This year, I set some specific goals for myself, to help me teach my kids better. While we have homeschooled for many years, I keep learning what works for us and what doesn’t. Last year my oldest and I were having a problem with every subject. We grew frustrated with our routine and not very much learning was happening. I didn’t like how we ended our school year but I knew we needed a break. As we normally school all year round. This past year we took a couple months off and revamped our entire routine. We did continue math facts and reading however.
So when I say I set guidlines for myself I need to explain why. Last year, I stopped taking care of myself. I stopped working out, I didn’t eat very well, I didn’t take any me time and that was a huge problem. I became easily frustrated and for a few months I had an awful time sleeping. It was a nightmare but without the sleep! So while we had our summer break I planned with both my kids and more importantly myself in mind.
My goals for myself are pretty simple. Take care of myself first because I know first hand, that you can’t focus on your kids if you can’t focus on anything at all. Taking care of yourself will leave you with a clear and restful mind. I don’t mean neglect your kids for a manicure ofcourse, but I do mean push off lessons for a quick 25-30 minute workout 3x a week. I promise, you will be able to make that time up. Especially when you’re in a more positive mood. Second, schedule “me time.” Tell the husband or grandma, you need a break. Even if it’s just an hour every other week. You can even consider working out, your “me time,” I tend to do this. Just. Make. Time. For. You! After a little “me time” you would be surprised how much you can get done. Lastly, feed my body right. Perhaps this is different for everyone. I personally don’t have the time or energy to meal prep every single meal for myself for the whole week. I know I will fail at this if I tried. What I can do however, is make a few substitutions and make healthier choices. I’m not in a beauty contest, I dont need to look perfect. What I NEED is to be healthy, physically and mentally for my kids. You would be surprised to know that what you eat can effect your mood drastically. Read the signs, your body will tell you what your body can and cannot handle. I also have been adamant about all of us taking our vitamins. We definitely hope to avoid sickness this winter. As with every family, each kid takes their turn to get sick. With a family of 5 it could be a whole month before we are all in the clear.

Let’s be real. It has only been a few weeks in, how can I know if this will keep up? The answer is, I don’t. But it’s a recipe for success if I continue to keep myself in mind.
